Top 5 Myths of a Free Website Builder Busted!

By Rabah Hasan

It is a common belief that free website builders somehow deteriorate your online reputation. There are several common myths that follow this belief and I’m here to debunk each of them.

Myth #1. Your website will look like a cookie-cutter website.

Today’s website building software couldn’t be further from the cookie-cutter look. Sure, you start with a plain design but many free websites are 100% customizable. If you don’t want your header to be at the top, simply drag it lower. If you don’t want to use the stock images loaded in the design, simply click and delete them and add your own. With a good website builder, your website is bound to be completely yours.

Myth #2. Your website will be limited.

In the past, website builders were simply not capable of providing the usability of a custom-built site. Not so anymore. Now, with the use of built-in features, widgets, and HTML code provided by websites, you can have all the functionality with far less work! If you want a flash banner, simply generate one using a flash generator. If you want a Facebook like button, you can copy and paste the code for a Facebook like button right into the HTML portion of your website. Long gone are the days where they are only capable of simple text and images.

Myth #3. Your website won’t rank high on the search engines.

This one is simply not true. If your website is online, then you have just as much opportunity to achieve a good search engine rank as the next website. Arguably, it’s even easier to get higher rankings with website builders because it is so simple to add keywords, descriptions, content, sitemaps, etc… to your website. If you are hand-building a website, it takes twice as much time to edit your META tags or add a blog post thus taking more time out of your day to optimize your site. With a website creation tool, you simply enter your keywords on each new page and they are inserted into the proper META tags in your HTML code. The only exception to this would be website builders that use only flash content. Flash content is not accepted by the search engines and therefore your content is not easily found.

Myth #4. People will be able to tell you are using a website builder.

Some people do not want their visitors to know that they are using a website builder. Even though I’m a little offended, it’s perfectly understandable. With every free website builder out there, you will see an ad or a banner on the website. Many of these have a very minimal footer at the bottom of the page. Some have no 3rd party ads to distract from your content, simply a shout out to the provider for providing the free website.

Myth #5. Website Builders are difficult to use.

This one can be true for some website builders but many of them are as easy as using Microsoft Word. Everything is right in front of you and easy to understand. You can drag and drop everything on your site to design an entire page without any technical knowledge. If you can use a web browser, you are more than capable of building a website. But the best part is that it is a free website builder and does not require any investment to try it out.
